One of the key players in the Spice Girls pop band was Victoria Beckham. This band was created as a kind of revolt against the total domination of male singers and dancers in bands in the UK. To stem this tide, the father-son combination of management gurus, Chris and Bob Herbert of Heart Management were determined to create an all-female group that would stop the male bands’ domination.

The road to the release of their debut album, Wannabe, was a rollercoaster ride. First, one of the five members, Michelle Stevenson, was sacked for her lack of dedication. She would go on to tell everyone that it was she who opted out, because of her mother’s breast cancer. Victoria was the first and only member of their group to rubbish this claim, saying that the rest of the team would not have liked to put up with her total lack of discipline.

Then, the absence of a contract between the producers and the singers was a grey area, which made the girls apprehensive about continuing with the group. They insisted that they perform for industry people, whom they wanted to impress. When the chance did come in December 1994 at the Nomis Studio, the terrific response they got made Heart Foundation present a quickly drawn up contract. But now, the girls refused to sign it. The major instigation for this rebellion came from Victoria, who, on her father’s insistence, held back from signing the contract. Thus, Victoria played a major part in steering the destiny of the album.
