When the Spice Girls took the UK music charts by storm in 1996 with the release of ‘Wannabe’, nobody could have known the impact they would have and the fame they would acquire. Victoria Beckham (then Adams), nicknamed ‘Posh Spice’ by Top of the Pops magazine; Emma Bunton, ‘Baby Spice’; Geri Halliwell, ‘Ginger Spice’; Melanie Brown, ‘Scary Spice’; and Melanie Chisholm, ‘Sporty Spice’, quickly became household names. They adopted the slogan ‘Girl Power’, which became a motto for feminine empowerment and encouragement to young girls. Their success and achievements during the five years they were together is remarkable.

In itself, ‘Wannabe’ became the biggest selling single of all time by an all-female group, and remained at number 1 in the UK music charts for seven weeks. Their first album ‘Spice’ sold 1.8 million copies in the UK in seven weeks, making the girls the fastest selling group since The Beatles. They had six consecutive number 1s with ‘Wannabe’, ‘Say You’ll be there’, ‘2 Become 1’, ‘Mama/Who Do You Think You Are’, ‘Spice Up Your Life’ and ‘Too Much’, before ‘Stop’ broke their run by debuting and remaining at number 2. This made them the first female group to do this. Their second album ‘Spiceworld’ achieved similar success, but their third album ‘Forever’ – released after the departure of Geri Halliwell in 1998 – was not as much so, and only one single was released from it.

The girls officially split in 2001 to explore solo projects. However, in June 2007 they announced that they were reforming and releasing a Greatest Hits album alongside a tour and a record for Children in Need. So, watch out world, you’re in for another dose of Girl Power!
