When an artist, previously part of a well known group, strikes out on their own they often experiment with new ideas and new sounds in order to expand their horizons. A lot of great, innovative music has come from such artistic endeavors. Many groups who split up produce successful artists who even manage to cross over into other genres of music and have a successful career. In 2003 Victoria Beckham planned to hit it big in the States as a budding solo artist. The Spice Girls had been apart for some time and each member was taking a whirl at solo projects and various other avenues of interest. Victoria Beckham had decided to expand her horizons, step out of the pop circle and enter the hip-hop genre with her new solo project. Beckham teamed up with hip-hop producer Damon Dash and became the face of urban hip-hop clothing line Rocawear. Victoria recorded one record with Dash but there was growing tension between Beckham’s manager and Dash over the direction of Beckham’s sound. The album, titled ‘Come Together’, got shelved but was never released to the public. There was a rumor going around that Dash had slighted Beckham’s talent in an interview, saying that if they could make Beckham sound hot they could make anyone sound hot. Sometimes when an artist branches out of their genre, it doesn’t always work. But this doesn’t mean that it wasn’t worth a shot.
